For over 14 years, ORCA has pioneered in marine conservation in Peru developing rescue operations, veterinary sciences, education campaigns and conservation strategies with vanguard research, ocean culture and ethical values as the pillars for the enhancement of marine mammalogy and the protection of the marine ecosystem.

THE SOUTH PACIFIC MARINE MAMMAL CENTER

At the Center, ORCA provides veterinary care for sea-lions, dolphins, marine otters and penguins. We have successfully treated over a hundred cases of gastritis, pneumonia, fractures, septicemia, kidney failure and many more disorders. ORCA's pioneering veterinary science research includes the discovery of cancer in South American sea-lions, the presence of distemper virus in sea-lion rookeries along the coast, and the successfull treatment of a bottle-nose dolphin that presented with pneumonia, the first one ever rescued, rehabilitated, released and resighted in Peru."

OUR PATIENTS & CASES

Sea-lions have complex behaviors, personalities and vocalizations (their language). Dolphins, fur seals, marine otters and penguins physiology and behavior require knowledge and expertise to meet their medical needs. At ORCA we work with these characteristics in order to treat our patients on a case by case basis. Our Ethology and Cognition Program, enhances the rehabilitation process by psychological methodology to asserting cognitive behavior in each of our respective patients according to the species, stranding cause, treatment and human interaction
